I am truly proud of the Oakville Chamber Orchestra’s Concerto Competition. Our decision to make it an annual event was a very easy one; based not only on the outstanding and amazing talent of our winners, but also by the growing positive impact on our community that our concerts and activities are having. As we develop the competition, we plan more and more activities around it, so that young people can be inspired by the significant talents of our winners.
Artistically this concert is also very interesting because of the selections of our two violin soloists, Jasmine Lin and Arielle Silverberg. They have both selected works on Roma (Gypsy) themes. Although Ravel and Sarasate were not themselves of Roma descent, their music beautifully captures the Roma spirit. The two pieces (translated, the titles are Gypsy Tunes by Sarasate and Gypsy by Ravel), are quite different in character; although they are both concerned with virtuoso display, Ravel’s work is more of a fantasy. Its complex harmonies and extended opening solo might be regarded as a more sophisticated take on the tradition, but Sarasate’s wicked energy and expressivity have long made it an audience favourite. I’m sure you’ll enjoy both!
Come and celebrate our 30th anniversary as we celebrate the extraordinary talents of some amazing young musicians on the cusp of their career!

The Great Romantics
Saturday, Oct 18, 2014 at 7:30pm, Central Baptist Church
Sunday, Oct 19, 2014 at 3:00pm, St Simon’s Anglican Church
Dvořák: Serenade for Wind Instruments in D minor, Op. 44
Tchaikovsky: Serenade for Strings in C Major, Op. 48
It’s a great pleasure to welcome you to our 31st season, where we celebrate the Great Romantics, to an extent that we never have before. Tchaikovsky, Dvořák, Schumann, Chopin, Puccini are a few of the 19th century composers celebrated this season, and I’m glad you’ve joined us for some of the most beloved music of all time.
By Dvořák and Tchaikovsky’s time the Serenade was well established as a form, mostly by Mozart, whose works in this genre are consciously imitated by tonight’s composers. The feeling of an evening entertainment (serenade comes from the Italian word sera, meaning evening). Candlelight, Romantic mood, singing and dancing resonates throughout.
On a personal note, I’d like to thank the orchestra for the opportunity to display works of art by my mother, Inez. Both her and her art can be seen at the intermission reception (on Saturday only). It’s meaningful for both of us to have an opportunity to celebrate her creativity.

Sweet Serenade
Saturday, Mar 1, 2014 at 7:30pm, Central Baptist Church
Sunday, Mar 2, 2014 at 3:00pm, St Simon’s Anglican Church
Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61, Jacques Israelievitch, soloist
Brahms: Serenade in D Major, Op. 11
It is truly an honour for the Oakville Chamber Orchestra to play with such an
esteemed musician as Jacques Israelievitch. In rehearsal I have found him to be not only as outstanding as one expects considering his reputation and experience, but also to be a warm and friendly colleague to work with. I feel confident in speaking for the orchestra that these concerts are a milestone in our development as an ensemble. We certainly hope you enjoy the concert as much as we do. In addition to our wonderful soloist these two great works are outstanding examples of Germanic symphonic music. The Beethoven concerto is by turns tranquil, powerful and lyrical… it has a serenity in the first two movements and a joy in the last that are highly prized and rarely found. The Brahms Serenade is a true gem, a large scale chamber work that, although as long and complex as any of his symphonies, has a much more intimate character. It’s a pleasure to perform it for you.
